The St Lawrence river is home to some giant lake sturgeon, right on Montreal's doorstep. Though lake sturgeons don't grow to the 1000 lbs + range like their cousins, the white stugeon, they are still the biggest and strongest fish swimming the freshwater rivers and lakes in this part of North America. Sturgeon's bodies are almost entirely made up of strong muscle, so when you finally get a big sturgeon on the the line, I guarantee you'll experience a tougher fight than any other freshwater species caught around Montreal. Sturgeon fishing guides will locate schools containing the biggest sturgeons, anchor up stream, and have you still fishing for them with live worms.
Sturgeon fishing season opens in mid June in our region, most guided outings start some time in August, progressively getting better until sturgeon season closes on October 31st.
